Upcoming Exhibition: TIME & TIDE

A group exhibition titled TIME & TIDE (wait for no man) will go on show at StateoftheART Gallery in Cape Town from 15 February to 18 March 2023.

TIME & TIDE (wait for no man) is about the passage of time, and comprises a constellation of sculptural objects, paintings, paper collage and printmaking that serve as a meditation on the workings of time, and a recording of everyday life.

The exhibiting artists include Sylvester Zanoxolo Mqeku with his curious sandcast terracotta sculptures; Catherine Ocholla’s paintings of atmospheric skyscapes presenting powerful depictions of natural drama; Lisette Forsyth who paints contemporary figures superimposed on vintage maps and historical newspaper pages; Jo Roets and her delicate paper-thin clay creations; Laurel Holmes whose deep love of the natural world reflects in her environmentally driven printmaking; Corné Eksteen who explores contemporary human identities and energy in his portrait paintings; and Karla Nixon and her abstract paper collage artworks, reflecting the transience and the fragility of human lives.

Arts writer Lucinda Jolly comments, “The zeitgeist of our time lies in the acutely eclectic: it’s a smorgasbord of “nothing is art and everything is art”,  a time when artists disrupt and interrupt materiality by investigating the uses of new mediums and established ones to ascertain how far they can push the envelope to create something new and inspiring. This then becomes the meeting point of these 7 artists and their interpretation and manifestation of the theme of time.”
