Artwork Description

Water becomes both subject and lens in this contemplative print by Kristen McClarty. Beneath a network of reflections and swirling currents, the artist's own figure can be glimpsed below the surface, fragmented by movement, light and distortion. The result is a work that exists between self-portraiture, landscape and abstraction.

Printed from a hand-carved woodblock and finished as a screen print on Fabriano Rosaspina paper, Kicking Up Dust explores the visual complexity created when water transforms the familiar into something mysterious. Warm earth tones, soft greys and pale blues suggest sediment, stone and reflected sky, while intricate patterns of ripples draw the eye across the composition. The print rewards close looking, gradually revealing the submerged figure hidden within its layered surface.
