Artwork Description
Derived Abstraction #1 is a striking three-layer reduction woodblock print by South African printmaker Kristen McClarty. Printed by hand on Fabriano Tiepolo 290gsm paper, the work explores the space between representation and abstraction, layering coral, turquoise and charcoal-grey forms into a composition that suggests movement, memory and shifting perception.
McClarty's distinctive reduction printing process requires each successive colour layer to be carved from the same woodblock, making every edition both technically demanding and impossible to reproduce once completed. The overlapping translucent shapes create a sense of depth and rhythm, while the fluid linear elements evoke water, landscape and traces of the natural world.
Balancing precision with spontaneity, Derived Abstraction #1 reflects McClarty's ongoing investigation into abstraction through traditional printmaking techniques. The result is a contemporary artwork that rewards close viewing, revealing new relationships between colour, texture and form over time.
This limited edition woodblock print is available unframed and is part of a small edition of only nine impressions.
