Artwork Description
"Somershoek" sees Pascale Chandler working on a larger scale, with a foal emerging from a richly worked field of plum, violet, olive and sharp yellow-green. Rather than describing the animal in precise detail, Chandler builds its form through layers of acrylic, allowing colour, pattern and loosely handled marks to do much of the work.
Up close, the painting moves between abstraction and figuration; from a little distance, the horse comes firmly into view. That push and pull gives the work its energy, while the unexpected palette brings a distinctly contemporary edge to a familiar equestrian subject.
At 76 × 102 cm, Somershoek has enough scale to hold a wall and would be a striking choice for collectors looking for original contemporary equestrian art rather than a traditional horse portrait.
