Artwork Description
There is a lovely confidence to "Turtle Neck", where Pascale Chandler places horse and rider against a bold field of green. The horse is built from earthy browns, rust and black, while areas of untouched Yupo allow parts of the figure to fall away, giving the work its loose, contemporary character.
Chandler is particularly good at suggesting the relationship between horse and rider without overworking the image. Here, the rider sits quietly above the horse, almost absorbed into the composition, while the strong green backdrop gives this small work an immediate presence. It is unmistakably equestrian, but far removed from traditional sporting portraiture.
Turtle Neck is an original mixed media and ink work on Yupo paper, measuring 30 × 42 cm. Sold unframed and available for R3,250.
