22 Jan 2013
WITS ART MUSEUM
AN INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN ART: A SERIES OF 6 PUBLIC LECTURES
DATES Tues 12, 19, March and 2, 9, 16 and 23 April, 2013
TIME 18h30 to 19h30
PLACE Wits Art Museum
Wits Art Museum is delighted to present a series of introductory lectures on African art. The lectures will take place at the museum on Tuesday evenings at 18h30 in March and April. The lectures will be presented by Professor Anitra Nettleton, Head of the Centre for the Creative Arts of Africa (CCAA) and a world renowned Wits-based African art academic. Professor Nettleton was responsible for the introduction of African art into the art history syllabus at Wits in the 1970s and has been intimately involved in the development of the WAM collection over the last 30 years. Dr Paul Davis (an expert on the arts of Mali) and Ms Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, another CCAA staff member.
They will present an exciting and informative introduction to the Arts of Africa drawing extensively on the WAM collection. Fascinating issues of value, authorship, authenticity and meaning in historical and contemporary African art practice will be explored through discussion of particular examples. Course participants will be able to examine artworks from WAM’s collection while learning about the contexts within which they were made and used.
The cost for the course is R1 000 (R700 for students/pensioners). Individuals may request a fee waiver through a letter of motivation.
