Artwork Description
A winding road leads through an immense mountain landscape in Franschhoek Overberg by Janet Botes. The elongated panoramic format opens the view from one rugged slope to the next, with a solitary windmill standing against the valley and a tiny horse-and-rider silhouette appearing high in the pale turquoise sky.
Botes layers photography with drawn and painterly marks, allowing sections of the landscape to dissolve and re-form across the image. Warm ochres and sun-bleached earth tones contrast with cool green mountain peaks, while the luminous road creates a strong path through the centre of the composition. The result is a landscape shaped as much by imagination and memory as by place.
