A line of tall trees rises along a steep ridge in New Heights by Janet Botes, their slender trunks silhouetted against an expansive sky. Beyond them, softly lit mountains stretch across the horizon, giving this panoramic landscape a compelling balance between height, distance and open space.
Photographic elements merge with painted textures, translucent layers and looping drawn marks. Deep forest greens and charcoal tones gather across the foreground, while muted gold and pale turquoise bring light to the distant slopes and sky. The landscape shifts gradually into abstraction, encouraging the eye to move between recognisable natural forms and the expressive marks layered across them.
