Artwork Description
A deep blue stretches across the top of "Vortex Shift", giving way to a rush of violet, lilac and electric orange. Below, fine lines twist and scatter through clouds of colour, creating the impression of something caught in a powerful current.
South African artist James de Villiers has a fascination with the forces and energies we cannot see, and this painting brings that interest to life. There's a sense of movement everywhere you look. Bright orange marks appear to shoot across the canvas, while delicate yellow lines curl and loop through the purple, drawing your eye into the centre of the painting.
What I particularly enjoy is how James balances all this activity with the quieter areas of deep blue and violet. There's plenty happening, but the painting never feels crowded. Step closer and you'll find small details that are easily missed from across the room.
At 170 cm wide, Vortex Shift is a substantial original abstract oil painting that deserves a generous wall. The rich blues and purples have a wonderful depth, while those unexpected flashes of orange bring the whole composition to life. A striking choice for a contemporary home, particularly above a long sofa or in a spacious living area.
