Artwork Description
A horse and rider emerge from unexpected flashes of pink and green in Strawberry Jam, an original work by Pascale Chandler. There is something playful about the colour, but the drawing beneath it is assured: the lowered head of the horse, the bend of its legs and the upright rider give the work a clear equestrian character without spelling out every detail.
Chandler works with ink and mixed media on Yupo, allowing marks to overlap, soften and occasionally disappear altogether. Pale washes around the figures leave plenty of breathing room, while the saturated colour at the centre draws the eye straight back to horse and rider. It is a lively, contemporary take on equestrian art and a particularly appealing small-format work.
Strawberry Jam measures 30 × 42 cm, is sold unframed and is available for R3,250.
