Karen Wykerd is a Cape Town-based artist working across embroidery, oil paint and acrylic.
Inspired by both urban and natural environments, her work explores the way light transforms the places we encounter every day. Streets, forests, waterways, beaches and views of Table Mountain become subjects for reflection, revealing moments of beauty that are often overlooked in the pace of contemporary life. After graduating from the Johannesburg College of Art with a Diploma in Graphic Design, Wykerd spent several years working in advertising before becoming a full-time artist in 2008. Since then, she has developed a distinctive practice that moves between painting and embroidery, united by a fascination with light, atmosphere and the relationship between nature and the built environment.
Her work is held in private collections in South Africa and internationally and is recognised for its craftsmanship, quiet optimism and ability to transform familiar places into moments of contemplation.
