Artwork Description
There is something wonderfully playful about Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series I by Kitty Dörje. Vivid greens and electric blue transform the historic pool at Kirstenbosch into a place that feels part garden, part memory and part imagined world.
The series grew from Dörje's childhood memories of visiting the pool with her mother, when she thought of it as a wishing well: throw in a coin and perhaps good fortune would find its way back to you. Although the pool has been known by different names, to the artist it remains Lady Anne Barnard's Bath, a name carrying its own sense of history, mystery and romance.
Dörje is especially fond of this corner of Kirstenbosch's Dell, where lush vegetation surrounds the pool and the garden's metal cycads and dinosaurs add an unexpected note of whimsy. Her bold, graphic interpretation captures that mixture of the real and remembered, while the brilliant colour suggests the life-giving mountain water that flows through the pool and onwards into the gardens.
Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series I is an artist's proof (A/P) silkscreen print on paper, measuring 50 × 50 cm unframed, and is available for R3,850.
