Artwork Description
In Derived Abstraction #2, Kristen McClarty pushes the reduction woodblock process towards a language of rhythm, transparency and movement. Layers of soft coral, turquoise and pale grey drift across the surface, intersecting and overlapping to create a composition that feels both structured and fluid.
Hints of water, reflected light and shifting currents emerge and disappear within the image, never fully resolving into a recognisable scene. Instead, the work invites the viewer to engage intuitively, discovering new forms and relationships within the layered marks. The subtle registration of colour and texture reveals the handmade nature of the print, celebrating the physical process of carving, inking and printing each successive layer from a single woodblock.
Printed by hand on Fabriano Tiepolo paper in a limited edition of nine, Derived Abstraction #2 exemplifies McClarty's ability to balance technical precision with a sense of openness and spontaneity. The result is a contemporary abstract print that brings both calm and visual intrigue to a space.
