Artwork Description

A lone fisherman bends over lengths of rope, his figure rendered in loose, expressive strokes of pale blue, ochre, black and white. The looping lines spread across the composition, echoing the routes, contours and coastal markings printed beneath them.

Lisette Forsyth has painted Roped In in ink and acrylic directly onto a vintage nautical map of the Cape coastline. Rather than serving simply as a background, the original paper map remains clearly visible, its aged surface, printed details and fold lines becoming an integral part of the artwork. The meeting of figure, rope and chart creates a layered connection between the fisherman’s labour and the waters represented beneath him.

Measuring 111 x 83 cm framed, this original artwork is presented behind glass in a warm wooden frame. Its generous scale and finely detailed map surface reward both close viewing and appreciation from across a room.
