Laurel Holmes works with smoky blue-grey and deep charcoal, broken by small flashes of warm ochre that catch the eye like light flickering across the surface.
Rather than painting the river as a conventional landscape, Holmes brings us close to the water itself. Reflections, ripples and submerged shapes overlap, giving the small painting a surprising sense of depth and movement. At just 20 × 20 cm, it is an intimate study of a place the artist knows well.
