Artwork Description
If you've visited Silvermine Nature Reserve, you'll have seen the beautiful tea-coloured water of the dam, stained a reddish-brown by tannins released from the surrounding fynbos.
Laurel Holmes has captured something I particularly love about this place. The rich, earthy colour of the water is interrupted by flashes of white where the light catches the ripples. Look closely and you'll find all sorts of movement in those little brushstrokes, with copper, amber and dark charcoal tones mingling across the surface. Rather than painting the dam and its surrounding mountains, Laurel has brought us right down to the water itself. There's no horizon to distract us, just the changing patterns of light and colour. It's a lovely reminder of how much there is to see when you stop and look at something familiar.
Silvermine IX is an original oil painting on stretched canvas, measuring 50 × 50 cm, and is available for R9,850.
