Artwork Description
"I found this Karoo Mermaid on a windy afternoon in the Tankwa Karoo. I was on my way to Sutherland, traveling on a dirt road. At "Sekretaarspan" as the older folks call it she was there, almost glued to the small dam. I just caught a glimpse of her".
Suspended between myth and memory, "Karoo Mermaid" by Lizelle Kruger presents a striking young woman against a distinctly South African backdrop of a Karoo windpump and reservoir.
Kruger is known for weaving narrative and symbolism into her figurative paintings, often drawing on the cultural landscapes and histories of South Africa. Here, the windpump rises above the figure like a modern totem, while the weathered reservoir introduces a sense of place deeply rooted in the Karoo's agricultural heritage. The flowing white petticoat and bonnet lend the composition a timeless quality, evoking echoes of ancestry, tradition and belonging. Rendered with meticulous attention to detail, the painting balances realism with a subtle sense of surrealism. The figure appears both grounded within the landscape and somehow removed from it, encouraging viewers to contemplate themes of identity, heritage and the stories that shape our connection to place.
