At first glance, "Forward" feels calm and minimal. A broad field of warm reds stretches beneath an open expanse of white, interrupted only by two subtle forms that emerge from the layered surface. The composition is pared back, yet full of quiet tension, encouraging the eye to pause and consider what lies beneath.
Karla Nixon builds the work through a process that is both intuitive and painstaking. Sheets of archival paper are painted by hand before being torn into hundreds of individual pieces and carefully assembled into a richly textured surface. The result is an artwork that changes with the light, revealing shifting shadows and subtle variations in colour throughout the day.
The title suggests movement and resilience. Whether the solitary vertical form represents a path, a figure or a marker on a journey is left intentionally open. Likewise, the darker clustered forms hint at obstacles, memories or places passed along the way. Nixon's work rarely dictates a narrative, instead allowing each collector to bring their own experiences to the piece.
