Artwork Description
A canopy of trees stretches across the upper half of Sentient XIV, their branches so closely intertwined that they almost become one. Laurel Holmes has etched every knot, twist and cluster of foliage in black, leaving the trunks and branches beautifully defined against the white paper.
Beneath the trees, a scattering of small, rounded shapes has been embossed directly into the paper. There is no ink here, just the delicate raised impressions of what appear to be pebbles. It's a lovely detail that you might miss at first, and one that makes this work particularly rewarding to see in person.
This original South African landscape print combines traditional etching with embossing, allowing Laurel to explore the different textures of the natural world. Part of her Sentient series, the work is numbered 10/12 in a limited edition of just twelve prints.
