Artwork Description
The trees in Sentient XIII seem to have grown in response to the wind, their trunks bending low and their branches stretching sideways. Laurel Holmes captures their wonderfully irregular shapes in a fine black etching, with every twist and tangle of foliage carefully observed.
What makes this particular work so interesting is the embossing beneath the trees. Almost invisible at first, the raised impression becomes apparent as the light catches the paper, adding another dimension to the landscape. The contrast between the dark, intricate etching and the subtle relief gives this small work a character all its own.
Part of Laurel Holmes's Sentient series, this original limited edition print is numbered 9/12. Created using etching and embossing on cotton rag paper, it measures 33 × 35 cm and is available unframed for R3,000.
