Artist Description

The Thoughtful Man is a series of portraits that I’m currently working on, as oil paintings or drawings, depicting the modern man as I see him subjectively.
This series is a collection of men whom I know personally — regardless of generation, religion, status, colour, sexual preference and country; relatives and friends who have held up the mirror of inspirational maleness, have some defining character I look up to and shown me the more positive, albeit imperfect, characteristics of being a modern man in South Africa. As it seems that men are no longer viewed in a positive light in our society, or seen at all, I wanted to take a look at the archetypes of men and their reactions and feelings towards women and their place in nature.

The Pagan is an oil painting I did from life of my friend Rohan. I like his wild carefree nature and his naturing behaviour towards his young daughter. He is a great example of a young man connected to elemental nature, in a world gone mad with materialism and superficiality. His behaviour and outlook are individual and 'alternative' to the mainstream. A poet, an artist, a photographer, and a hard worker, his is a loyal and gentle demeanour. I wanted to capture this direct and thoughtful aspect in his faraway gaze and his interesting profile. The swooping Lanner Falcon represents unattachment to heavy and binding materialism; it represents the power of nature and the spiritual elements, and is a symbol of wisdom and victory.
