Artist Description

Culture is an ever-evolving thing, it is hard to say what it fully encapsulates other than that it exists in relationship to people. The idea of culture as something that is evolving and organic is my conceptual point of departure. In my artworks, this process is explored from one to the other. The series links to the contemporary setting through the use of three people from my city of Port Elizabeth, each with their own unique background and cultural identity.

"Luminescence" is about how culture can act as a light, a guide and a distraction. In this piece I wanted to paint someone beautiful and create and image that exudes beauty and confidence. To achieve that I chose to draw some inspiration from the work of Gustav Klimt which is evident in her top. Klimt painted Viennese women at the height of decadence for European culture. This idea of decadence is translated to the South African context, but instead of actual decadence it is the illusion of decadence. An illusion that is being sold to the youth of the country, mainly the black youth, in the form of rhetoric, heritage and party slogans. This is how culture acts as a distraction. On a side note, the model for this piece is a friend of Michelle's. This piece is the culmination of the series and shows how culture can link us in a strange and unlikely manner.
