Ladder I is a deeply personal self-portrait by Kitty Dörje, made during a period of turmoil and anxiety in the artist’s life.
Drawn in charcoal, the figure appears to be climbing a ladder, emerging from a dense field of restless black marks. The image has an immediate, unsettled quality: the body, ladder, and surrounding darkness seem to shift in and out of focus, capturing something of the uncertainty Kitty was experiencing at the time.
There is also a sense of effort in the upward movement of the figure. Rather than presenting a conventional self-portrait, Dörje gives us a glimpse of herself in the midst of something: climbing, searching, or perhaps simply trying to find a way through.
At 160 cm high, Ladder I has a strong physical presence. This original charcoal drawing on Fabriano paper measures 111 × 160 × 6 cm framed behind glass and is available for R25,000.
