Artwork Description
A pincushion protea stretches across an aged page of the Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette, its curling petals and slender styles rendered in cream, ochre, black and small flashes of yellow. Loosely painted leaves gather beneath the flower in softened greens and blue-greys.
The 1886 Gazette page lists botanical and common names alongside notices relating to tree planting and the distribution of seeds. This printed history becomes an especially fitting setting for Forsyth’s botanical subject. Fine lines, bold dark marks and areas of translucent colour allow the original text to remain visible through the flower, creating a layered meeting of natural form and archival record.
