In the studio with Cedric Vanderlinden

Favourite material to work with?

I am quite partial to oil paint, if we are talking about strictly traditional materials. However, I incorporate an enormous amount
of found objects, all-purpose crack filler and hessian. I love a strong texture and use almost anything to make it happen.

What themes do you pursue?
I follow traditionally romantic themes: the exotic, the terrifying, the breath-taking, and the alien. With that said, though, I am often
drawn to the inner landscape too: isolation, loneliness, loss, and fear.

How many years an artist?

I have been actively painting, as a student and as an artist for 20 years.

Which living or dead artist would you most like to meet?
I’d be fascinated to chat with Mark Rothko.

Where is your studio?

Right now, it is a garage but I need more space so I am working to find another, more accommodating space. I need to be able
to pace and expand. Being crammed doesn’t help at all.

Art school or self-taught?

Art School – Port Elizabeth Technikon, and then later at the NMMU

Prefer to work with music or in silence?

I prefer music. I have a cell phone crammed with songs. The headphones help me focus and shut out the world.

Favourite brush?

A very thick, but cheap, brush – I don’t know the manufacturer. It is absolutely lovely for washes over large surfaces.

Where can we find you out side of the studio?
If I am not in the studio, I am busy with my gallery Underculture Contemporary (
And if not there, then at Kung Fu, where I have been for the last 4 years or so.

If you couldn't be an artist, what would you do?

Believe it or not, I’m a pretty good administrator.

Interests other than art?

I have burning passion for experimentation and scientific inquiry. I also started Kung Fu about 5 years ago and
absolutely love it. Apart from that, I role-play (think Dungeons and Dragons), cook, and occasionally play
computer games.

What do you collect?
Art-wise, I collect paintings and drawings mostly.

What was the best advice given to you as an artist?
