ArtExpo2025 : Matryoshka dolls at StateoftheART

29 Oct 2018

StateoftheART is thrilled to have been involved with the #ArtExpo2025 and the exhibition of these two Matryoshka dolls as an art project in support of Russia's bid to host the World EXPO 2025 in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

Russia's theme as part of its candidature for the World Expo 2025 is “Changing the World: Innovations and Better Life for Future Generations”. Visit the website here>>>

Ten Matryoshka dolls were painted by Russian artists and designers including Tim Avvakumov, Alena Azernaya, Anna Belousova, Andrey Karpov, Pavel Agalakov, Melissa Vakhabova and Dmitry Shishkin. The human-sized dolls are made out of fibreglass and are accompanied by a smartphone app with elements of virtual reality: by focusing the camera on them, you can get information about the achievements of mankind at different times presented at various World Expos.

On 5th October, the Matryoshka dolls were sent to the largest cities of the world and exhibited in iconic places, including the Palace of the Marqués de Alfarrás (Russian House) in Barcelona, the Shanghai Center for Contemporary Art M50, the I-Gallery art gallery in Paris and StateoftheART Gallery in Cape Town!

Ten more not yet painted Matryoshka dolls travelled with them, so that local artists could create their own interpretations of a Matryoshka. The artists include Gene Porter from Barcelona, Eugenio Kutika from Buenos Aires, Nina Nolte from Berlin, Mariska Nell from Dubai, a graffiti team from Brussels and others.

At StateoftheART, one of the Matryoshka was painted by Russian artist Andrey Karpov, and the other was painted live in the Gallery by South African artist Claude Chandler.
