Nuclear Winter by Sylvester Zanoxolo Mqeku is a pair of small ceramic sculptures with a surprisingly powerful presence. Made using Mqeku’s distinctive sand-casting process, each form carries the rough impressions and irregularities of its making, with clustered shapes that suggest fragments, growths or objects unearthed from the ground.
The pale, ash-like exterior gives way to reflective glazed interiors in tones of grey, copper green and gold. That contrast feels particularly apt for a work titled Nuclear Winter: surfaces that appear scorched, weathered and exposed on the outside reveal an unexpected richness within.
Designed as a diptych, the two pieces have their own individual character but belong together, their angled openings creating a natural conversation between them.
Each sculpture measures 15 × 15 × 10 cm. Nuclear Winter is sold as a pair for R17,250.
