Artwork Description
In Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series V, Kitty Dörje plays with the contrast between the cool blue of the pool and the extraordinary greens of Kirstenbosch. Ferns crowd the composition, their repeated lines and overlapping forms creating a sense of the Dell as somewhere abundant, slightly secret and removed from the world beyond the gardens.
Behind this joyful silkscreen lies a very personal association. Dörje remembers visiting the pool with her mother as a child and believing it to be a wishing well. Throw in a coin, she imagined, and good fortune might find its way back to you. It is a memory that has stayed with her, as has the name Lady Anne Barnard's Bath, regardless of what the pool may be called today.
The final work in the series brings together the things that make the place so compelling for Dörje: water, lush vegetation, history and the stories we attach to places over a lifetime.
Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series V is a silkscreen print on paper, edition 1/4, measuring 50 × 50 cm unframed. Available for R3,850.
