I loved this image so much for so many reasons, that I decided to paint it. To me this painting more depicts a feeling than anything else. A feeling of companionship. A sense of ageing, and with that life experience, and wisdom. A sense of having experienced so much, that a very deep depth of soul has formed. Yet this is not only felt and experienced, but shared. There is a strong sense of sharing in this image. And maybe it’s the very fact that life is shared that gives it more value, meaning, or joy? The dog’s expression speaks of absolute contentment, but also conveys some sense of honour, loyalty, and royalty.
And all this happens within the context of this landscape that is in the background, but which frames this image and which also has layers of meaning. The beach is a place where friends go for walks. It’s a place where time goes by, yet little changes fundamentally. However, small things are different every time you go there – the sky, the clouds, the colour of the water, the tides, etc. etc. And this is the place where memories are created, and also where times of reflection occur. The blue-grey colour creates a sense of nostalgia for me – yet also of peace.
