Artwork Description

In Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series III, Kitty Dörje places the brilliant blue pool at the heart of a tangle of oversized ferns and subtropical foliage. Layers of lime, emerald and turquoise give the silkscreen an exuberant, almost storybook quality, while the decorative stonework leads the eye towards the water.

Dörje’s fascination with the pool is rooted in childhood visits to Kirstenbosch with her mother. She remembers thinking of it as a wishing well, a place where a coin tossed into the water might return as luck or prosperity. Years later, that remembered sense of possibility remains part of how she sees the place.

Rather than documenting Kirstenbosch exactly as it appears, Dörje brings together observation and memory, allowing a familiar Cape Town landmark to become something more intimate and imagined.

Lady Anne Barnard's Bath Series III is a silkscreen print on paper, edition 1/4, measuring 50 × 50 cm unframed, and is available for R3,850.
