In this last work of the series it was very much about thick paint versus thin paint – in the shirt thin paint was used, in the jeans I first used thin paint, then worked over it with thick paint. Even in the hair I used mostly thin paint, and then just a hint of thick application of paint near her arm. And a very translucent layer of paint in the arm allowed the wooden surface to shine through. In all these paintings I especially focused on the act of painting – the application of the paint on the wooden surface. I explored new mark makings and new textures. It was also a challenge to allow the wooden surface to become part of the work, and knowing how much of its surface to integrate into the artwork.
