Artwork Description
There's a wonderful sense of stillness in "In Limbo", a new original oil painting by South African artist Kate Schärf. A cluster of foliage emerges from the shadows on the left, while the landscape to the right gradually disappears into a veil of mist.
Kate works with a beautiful range of deep forest greens, blue-greys and soft turquoise, using loose, confident brushstrokes to suggest foliage, shifting light and the uneven ground beneath the trees. The contrast between the darker foreground and the pale, misty distance gives the painting a real sense of depth.
What makes this work particularly appealing is how much Kate leaves to the imagination. We can recognise the landscape without knowing exactly where it is, and the title "In Limbo" seems particularly fitting for a scene caught somewhere between clarity and obscurity.
At 80 × 80 cm, this square-format painting would make a lovely addition to a contemporary living room, bedroom or quieter space in the home, particularly alongside natural materials and understated furnishings.
