Artist Description

The term ‘materiality' references the meaning that the material qualities of the mediums used to create an artwork, bring to that artwork. In Laurel Holmes’ drawings, “The softer places inbetween I & II, the rocks are drawn with charcoal she has made from dead protea wood found around where she lives. The subject matter of the drawings, rocks on the mountainsides of this area, are emphasised by this approach in using the charcoal as opposed a narrative-led explanation of the work. The charcoal was surprisingly soft and dark, and the nature of charcoal is that it is transformed by the process of fire, which these environs are often exposed to. Harsh and unforgiving environs, even without the fire.

Materials incorporated into artworks also allow the viewer to also decipher our conceptual and material world by attaching their own interpretations of the subject matter and the materials used.
