Artist Description
Kristen McClarty has spent the last year developing a new body of work, using reduction and multiple block woodblock, monotype, and paint, to translate feelings of immersion in a place. This work covers her interaction with the environment of the Cape, stretching from the coast to the Cederberg. Her most recent large scale monotype prints, are based on rock formations which she found, close to her home.
A Thursday afternoon solitary walk off the path, a scramble, a scratch, a slip and a wild beehive. A reroute and a still moment of listening to the baboons barking far off. A push through the bushes and a skirt around a massif, with towering slabs casting shadows. And there, hidden from the village, a boulder the size of a large car, has rolled down the cliffs and become wedged between two rock walls, prevented from pursuing its path of destruction. The village below is oblivious. How long has it been there? Does anyone know about it?
A suspended sentence. For what? Forgotten transgressions.
