I recently returned to this work after being inspired by Midnight Oil's "blue sky mine".
The portrait is of a "Riel" dancer in the Northern Cape. The Riel is danced around the campfire after hunting expeditions, good harvests or during a celebration. In Nama culture the dance is known as Ikhapara which is derived from the word "khapas" which means "hat". The hat of the man is a useful article to win a lady's hand in marriage. With the environmental problems we are experiencing here in Cape Town with regards to water scarcity and the fracking in the Karoo I am alluding to the need to connect with the land and the environment and return to a symbiotic relationship in this work.
