Pathways is an exhibition of work inspired by the constantly changing landscapes of the Okavango Delta.
This vast area is flooded annually, a process that forms thousands of waterways that bring a sense of renewal and rebirth. It is a land that epitomises change and creation with a vibrant energy that is unapologetically perfect.
This body of work explores the myriad of pathways presented to us in our life – how we flow through time, changing course over and over again. The work is diverse and spontaneous, capturing the wildness and beauty of the Delta.
The paintings examine the landscape from divergent perspectives, from aerial views that approach abstraction to close-ups of flowers, reeds and reflections. Everywhere is the feeling of water – by turns luminous, inky, murky or iridescent. Sternberg charts the transformations that water brings to the region: stormy palms trees and raging, turbulent waters, expansive silent vistas and wild wetlands, flaming reeds and abundant lily pads.
In stark contrast to the paintings are the graphic linear drawings and paperworks. They give time to pause and reflect. Topographical and flowing, the works echo the constantly changing landscapes of the delta and within ourselves. Products of the studio, they question the feelings that may come after the floods, a time to absorb the changes that wash through life.
