There’s something wonderfully unsettled about Anachronism X. You can make out a vase of flowers, but just as the arrangement comes into view, it seems to slip away again. Corné Eksteen distorts the image into ripples and reflections, giving the painting the feeling of something remembered rather than clearly seen.
The dark background makes the colour all the more seductive. Soft pinks and creams sit alongside bursts of orange and red, with deep greens appearing and disappearing between them. From a distance it has the presence of a traditional floral still life; come closer and it becomes far less predictable.
Painted in oil on a 5 cm-deep stretched canvas, Anachronism X measures 50 × 50 cm and is for sale at R17,500.
