Artist Description

Artwork sold unframed.

Artist Lizelle Kruger pays tribute to Prince Albert's famous character Jan Schoeman, who died in 2011. Better known as Outa Lappies, it's rather ironic that it was his very clothing, the garments that made him so well-known and allowed him to make a living for most of his life, which contributed to his untimely death.

In July 2011 Outa Lappies was making preparations in his humble home in Prince Albert Road for a trip to Prince Albert some 45 km away. After feeding his cats he lit a fire to warm the water in the geyser, then turned away without noticing that the tail of his patchwork cloak had caught fire.

Within moments he was engulfed by flames and although he stayed conscious and greeted everyone who transported him courteously, he sustained 80 per cent burn wounds and was transferred from Prince Albert Hospital to George Hospital where he succumbed from his wounds on 7 July.
