      • 'Remerge' is a body of work dealing with the ever shifting aspects of personal life, things merging with and emerging from one another, as well as the positive and negative connotations inherent in this flux.

When the old identity suddenly occupies a new space in a new environment an acute sense of loss is felt yet, by reclaiming dormant aspects of the self - forgotten during compromises inherent in romance - liberation is experience in the grief. Remerge is also a kind of acknowledgement and a settling down; a coming back to something, possibly home.

The drawn mark allowed an outlet for the emotional turmoil that was processed during a time of the loss of a love relationship. The work was not conceptualized before hand but rather emerged through the process and act of drawing. The ladder often appears in this series of drawings. It is a prop that allows me to rediscover my feminine strength through climbing.

I draw over a long period of time and then come to a resolution. I stop when I see a pattern in the work and it looks complete, resolved. In this case the unresolution was the resolution. I prefer not to explain the work in a neat and rational text but instead allow the marks themselves to activate a memory or resonance in the viewer. I am surprised and happy to hear the results that arise.

Remerge looks at how life interrupts the creative process and poses obstacles that can also be seen as opportunities for growth and reflection. Interruption also means pause – indicating a moment of not doing, not taking part in those aspects of life which may interfere with the natural flow of art practice but, simply being consciously still, before finding ones way through the labyrinth of daily life.

      • Which new trends or South African artists do you find inspiring at the moment?
I like the immediacy of preformative art, people that I have come into contact with include Ed Young, Athi-Patra Ruga, Andrew putter, Jared Ginsberg and Niklaas Zimmer. I like the use of alter egos that are created in the work of Mary Sibandes, Nandipha Mntambo and  Steven Cohen. I recently saw a painting of headless woman at The AVA by  Cinga Samson which I liked. I have enjoyed doing video projects on geographic spaces with Jade Gibson.

Which South African deceased artist do you most admire and why?

Billy Mandindi, I admired his artwork, he had a sense of humour.
Pierneef I like the quite structural elements in his paintings. I find his paintings peaceful.

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?

It was an projection I saw at the Grahams town festival by Brent Meistre. The work showed a body lying flat on the ground almost remerging with the soil. The body moved across the surface of the South African landscape in this position. I sat and watched the projection in a darkened room and found it very moving.

Where do you get your inspiration for your work?

In the current body of work I am putting together I go for walks and certain objects catch my eye. For some reason they catch my eye and so I pick them up. I have a collection of these objects in my studio. I also page through magazines and tear out images that catch my eye.

Do you have any rituals or habits involving your art-making that you can tell us about?

I like to burn incense in the space before I start working. I like to listen to music while I work.

What do you like most about being an artist?

It gives you the freedom to wake up and decide what you want to do with the day. I like the feeling of creating ones own destiny, steering ones own ship.
How do you handle bad days when you experience artist's block?
I go swimming or jogging or walking in the mountain or just a walk around the city. There is always inspiration all around me.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

I graduated from UCT with Honours Level Fine Art Degree majoring in print making.

Do you feel that you want to make a difference to the world or in people's lives? If yes, how?

Yes I would like to make a difference to the world, I do this through workshops I run. I am preparing to do a workshop using drums and drawing. In my artwork I don’t set out to change anything I just communicate my own stumbling blocks along the path of life.

What are your plans for the coming year?

I am planning on starting up drawing and drumming workshops under the name Green Rhythm and I am working towards another exhibition.
