Artist Description

I remember the first time I saw hand prints on a cave wall. The personal resonance I experienced with that hand print surprised me. Here was the unmistakable and unique signature of a living, breathing human being that had stood before this very rock face and who had left an unmistakable mark of personal identity. I experienced the sense of a shared connection reaching back over millennia. It unlocked in me an innate shared history of common identity. At a very personal level our hands define us, they are unique. Our fingerprints…unique. In the digital age unique physical identifiers such as this remain at the basis of our connection with specific technology. They are the password and gateway to unlock personal space on our laptops, to unlock our bank account or our passport as we cross the boundaries of a geopolitical divide. Hands connect across established boundaries, they affirm love, trust and friendship. We caress those we love with our hands, we shake hands with friends and colleagues in greeting. We use them to show joy, punctuate our speech or express our anxiety, anger, horror or anguish. As artists they are the connection with the physical making us able to manifest the inner workings of our minds as the conduits of creativity. They are the connection between the mind and the eventual form of a sculptural piece.
