Artist Description

Taking Shelter is a painting that talks of vulnerability, strength and persistence. All of which nature possess when it comes in contact with humanity.

The scrub hare is a beautiful creature whose habitat is the grasslands and savannah - and now can be found in the suburbs. Although often under threat it finds ways to exist and often thrive. In one of the areas in Durban a few domestic rabbits escaped and now a whole colony of rabbits live on one of the verges of a busy road.

Like the rabbits, the city plants in the built up areas finds a way to grow and multiply finding the most innovative ways to survive! Although they are not tendered and shaped by humanities desire to control they often take on an appearance as if they are bonsai trees. The shallow soil in the gutters and cracks in the walls mould the plants into becoming twisted and stunted in appearance.
