I use the human portrait and form of others to explore my psyche as well as the emotions of my subject. Other people’s forms often embody my emotions in a more direct manner than myself as their external selves may embody the appearance of an emotion.
'Johan' is part of a series of portraits that talk of an internal world and the necessity to respect the need to retreat into this world to gain an equilibrium. In life Johan has the ability to extract himself from his surrounds and slip into a reality only known to him.
The subject for this painting is a close friend who I have painted many times. He is never anxious about how I will paint him, which gives me added freedom to ”use” his form to serve the needs of the canvas.
