These charcoal landscape drawings are a reaction to my changing environment. A lot of the concepts I explore, are a reflection of where I am at personally in my life.
My technique differs with each piece, but I always work on brown paper or Fabriano and I use charcoal and white coal as my main mediums. I layer different types of charcoal, from compressed to willow charcoal, as well as, white coal to create different shades of light and dark. The physical light in an image I take is a major factor in deciding what to draw. All these pieces come from photographs I have taken over the course of my life. Drawing in black and white forces you to see light and shadow, and often I’m up so close to the drawing( using charcoal pencils for detail) that I only see patterns and shapes that make up the bigger picture.
