Since 2006 I have been working on a body of work that is redefining documentary work through the merging of creative and anthropological fields. The production of Retrospect has created a vision of life in low-income South Africa. It comes from the people, and exposes many of the successes and failures that the society face. All of the original participants were infected with Tuberculosis, a disease which is prone to poor living conditions and of which South Africa has one of the highest rates in the world. Over time and questioning, Retrospect exposes what happens to people who get better. Getting sick for many is just another challenge to overcome, and so in Retrospect we see how all social issues within poverty are interlinked, and it starts looking for solutions to these issues collectively in recognition of both individual and social responsibility, and governments responsibility.
